Heavy rain, Life threatening flooding and water rescues.

In the afternoon and evening hours of April 28th, severe storms began rolling through the area bringing lots of lightning, isolated tornados and torrential downpours that created a life-threatening flood emergency. No tornados made it into Walker County.

Fire department, EMS, Police, Texas Task Force and even a Helicopter from the US Coast Guard have been working for well over 12 hours through the night to help rescue stranded motorists, and civilians stranded in their home by rapidly rising flood waters.

Flood waters were so strong that they actually washed out a portion of roadway on FM 2989 between I45 and FM247 leaving a 20-foot wide and 30-foot deep ravine where the roadway once stood. at least 2 cars fell into that hole not realizing it was there, leaving 5 people to be rescued by Fire department crews.

There were also several rescues along 11th street and Hwy 75 near the HEB where cars have been lifted by rising and pooling flood waters and swept into barricades.

Rainfall totals for walker county from around 4 pm on 4/28 to around 8am on 4/29 were in excess of 10" in some isolated areas but most places including downtown Huntsville received between 5 and 7 inches.
